City planners and Park and Rec are hosting a community day at Carlson Park to get the input of the community on what should be done with Carlson.

The date/times are:
Oct 2nd 4-6pm
Oct 3rd 11am-2pm

NOW is the time we need all trail users to go up there and make a big impact. So wether you are a mountain biker, hiker, trail runner, rock placer, bird watcher, xc skier, snow shoer, fatbiker, or general outdoor enthusiast get up there and tell these people that off-road, soft trails are what needs to happen up there. Seriously, this weekend will be the time to determine what will be happening in that park for years to come. So get up there!

Come to the trailhead and you will be directed from there
*If you cannot join either day and you have seen the park already, you can input comments to Andy via email.

Secondly, As we discussed at the last DHPT meeting the trail extension of Gunnar to the start of Little Big Horn was approved by P&R. I think it will be best to get this trail done quickly this fall so it can be packed in for winter and ready to rip for the spring. The trail is marked out and Gary did a little mowing to see more clearly where the trail will be going. A small group will head up there next weekend and determine where all the in/outs and finalize where the trail will be.Take a peek next time you are up there. Then we will have a work day on Oct 10 @ 9am up at the Van Peenen parking lot. Come for the whole thing or just come for an hour or two. All help is welcome - many hands makes for light work. I will have refreshments and food for lunch provided by thrivent financial for those that hang around all day.

Lastly, DHPT meeting scheduled for Oct 6th @ 7pm at the Whalen cabin (just past Phelps park)

Busy week for trail users. NOW is your chance to get involved!

Josie Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16188853658488855603noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1745602602710805846.post-49894513287186973072020-01-12T12:58:00.000-06:002020-01-13T09:19:20.110-06:00Winter Recreation Etiquette

With snow season around the corner (hopefully!) we would like to share these winter recreation tips for folks who enjoy the outdoors during the snow months. While these may be more fat bike-focused, they are good for all winter recreationists to consider.
It takes time to groom for skiing and fat biking, so we encourage all users to consider the following guidelines to help keep our winter trail use optimal.

For example, if you enjoy hiking consider snowshoeing as a great alternative! Not only does this help to pack down trails for fat bike riders, but you are not post holing groomed trails for other users.

1. If you’re leaving a rut, turn around

If there’s one cardinal rule of fat biking on groomed fattrack, it’s “don’t leave ruts in the trail.” Now, how to avoid leaving ruts is the key (see below), but if you’re out for a ride and find that you’re leaving a rut in the trail–turn around, and try again a different day (or during a different time of the day).

2. Use tires that are at least 3.8″ wide

When riding on fattrack, choose tires that are at least 3.8″ wide. Generally speaking, the wider the tire, the better. The Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association (CAMBA) notes that tire width correlates to the weight of the rider, saying “larger riders should run minimum 4.5-inch tires.”

3. Adjust your air pressure to the conditions

As a general rule, the softer the conditions, the lower the air pressure you need to run in your tires. Again, air pressure is dependent on rider weight, and a heavier rider may need to use a slightly higher air pressure than a light rider. As a rule of thumb: 1-4 psi for a “soft groomed surface,” and 6-8 psi for “hard surface and base.”

However, in soft conditions, it's recommend starting around 4-5 psi and working down from there. It’s easier to start a touch higher and let out air than it is to add air to your tires in the middle of a ride.

4. Don’t ride on a freshly-groomed trail

Freshly-groomed trails are rarely ready to be ridden immediately. Trails need time to harden, or ‘set up.’ The time required for a trail to set up depends on several variables, such as temperature and humidity, but it always requires a period of falling temperatures.

If you ride a freshly-groomed trail, leave a long rut in it, and then the trail sets up, your rut will be frozen in place, ruining the experience for everyone that comes after you.

5. Don’t post hole through a groomed trail

“Post holing” is the act of hiking in deep snow without snowshoes, leaving deep footprint holes behind you, which resemble post holes. If you reach a hill that you can’t pedal up on your fat bike, make sure that you walk in the unpacked snow off to the side of the trail.

However, in some places where the snowpack is very deep, you could easily sink in to your waist (or deeper) when you go off the packed trail. In such a situation, walking off the trail may be impossible. The best choice in this situation is, again, to turn around and not leave footprints.

6. As the weather warms, avoid thawing conditions

As the weather warms–either with a change in weather patterns or as spring approaches–trail conditions become more variable, with “freeze/thaw” conditions taking over. When the temperatures climb above freezing, make sure that you don’t ride when the trail is slushy–again, don’t leave ruts.

To avoid leaving ruts in freeze/thaw conditions, ride early in the morning when the trails are still frozen and packed. While the temps may climb above freezing, that doesn’t mean the trail immediately starts to melt. Snow temperature tends to lag 2-3 hours behind air temperature. Even if the air is sliding over 32 degrees, the snow is still a bit colder and tends to hold its shape and structure fairly well. However, expect variable conditions, and plan your route accordingly.

Areas with direct sunlight will soften and deteriorate more quickly, while forested or shadowed trail will stay firm for some time, even if it’s getting warm. This makes a mid-morning or lunchtime ride possible, especially when there was a cold overnight low.

7. Make sure that fat bikes are allowed on the trail you’re riding

Up until this point, we’ve primarily been discussing fat bike-specific fattrack, although most of these points apply to any groomed trail. But if you’re heading out to ride and you’re not sure if the trail you plan to ride is open to fat bikes, make sure you check the signs and trailhead kiosk.

Nordic ski trails are often very fun to fat bike on, but not all nordic ski trails are open to fat bikes. The same goes for snowmobile trails, snowshoe trails, and more. Legislation and regulation vary significantly across the nation, so do your homework.

8. Don’t ride over classical nordic tracks

While all of the above guidelines apply to riding on cross country ski trails as well, a specific consideration for nordic trails is to absolutely never ride across classical nordic ski tracks. The classical track is a parallel set of lines groomed into either side of the ski trail. Make sure that you fat bike on the wider area that’s groomed for skate skiing. Also, those who like to recreate on foot should not walk in ski tracks.

As with sharing any trail, these guidelines all boil down to mutual respect. Respect the other fat bikers on the trail. Respect other trail users. Respect the land manager. Respect the time, energy, and money invested on behalf of the groomer.

As we work to respect others around us, hopefully, our respect will get respect in return, and fat biking opportunities will only continue to grow!

We will be meeting at the old Bruening Garage near the Luge trail/Palisades Park lower gravel parking lot. We will meet by the DHPT trailer at 6:30 p.m.

Bring rakes, hand-saws, and/or clippers. We will be breaking off into small groups to hit up as many of the mountain bike trails we can to remove sticks.

This is a GREAT opportunity for folks who are nervous to attend a workday, because there will not be dirt work involved- just stick removal. Perfect for ALL AGES! Bring the kiddos!

You can find trail updates over on our Facebook page. Kruse went out on 2 different evenings and groomed the following:

2/27 a.m.
I got out grooming tonight (2/26). Public television, North Forty, Gunnar, East and West pines, Upper and Lower Little Bighorn, and First Right are all done. There’s some crazy layers of snow out there. Powder on top of hard pack, then a crusty ice layer with powder on top of that. No guarantees how well they’ll set up. Word of advice. Don’t fall off the trail...we might not find you till the time trials!

2/27 p.m.
I hit Public television, Gunnar, and the Pines again. I also hit Fred’s, The Luge, Old Randy’s, Upper Ice Cave, Stairway to Heaven/Boa, and Rocky Road. Should be a pretty good loop. Dunnings trails looked pretty good considering I hadn’t done any grooming on that side. There’s been a fair amount of snowshoeing going on over there.

Friday and Saturday look like decent days to hit up the trails. There will be tough spots where the snow is soft due to the snow depth, and getting to close to the edge may cause you to fall through. But a tough day of fat biking is better than a good day at work...right?!?

We totally appreciate folks who go out and hike with snowshoes! It definitely keeps the groomed trail happy and healthy vs. hiking in boots and poking holes into the trail. It can also help with grooming if we have too much snow to groom easily.

It's also frowned upon to hike and break though groomed ski trails.

The image off to the side is a great reminder for all of us on groomed trail etiquette!

If you're curious on snowshoes, you can rent a pair at Decorah Bicycles for $10.00- and that gives you 24 hours of use!

The new year is upon us and soon, the riding season will be as well! We have some DHPT updates to pass on.

Carlson Property updates are very positive. It's not going to be a quick project, but we're excited for the conversations taking place and the excitement surrounding it.

DHPT Officer Elections were held on 2/5/19 and the officers are:

President- Nick Pearch
Vice President- Brian Fuhrmann
Secretary- Josie Smith
Treasurer- Jeff O'Gara
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We also want to remind folks who are signed up for our email updates, be sure to check your spam folder. We send out the meeting reminder or trail work day reminders via mass email, and sometimes email systems see it as "junk." If you are on our email list and seem to not receive emails, please let Josie know- josie@decorahbicycles.com

Also, if you wish to not be on the mailing list anymore, simply send Josie and email with the email address you wish to have removed.

If you would like to be added to the DHPT Mailing List or Trail Maintenance list, send Josie an email letting her know which list(s) you'd like to be added to.
Donations to DHPT are always welcome and should be sent to:

We have created an event on Facebook for those who are on social media.

We have several trails that need some TLC: Luge, Fred, Dust Bowl, & IPT

Many hands make light work, and it's a great way to give back to the trails we love to ride, hike, and run on. If you can show up to lend a hand for any amount of time- it's greatly appreciated!

Where to meet is located in the picture indicated by the circle.

There should be tools available, but you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

Hello All,

A
bunch of the trails on the south side are really good and ride able, so
get out and enjoy. On another note, a bunch of the trails have sustained
damage from the heavy rains a few weeks back, when the frost wasn't out
of the ground. This caused major rut damage, small rivers right down
the middle.

I went out today and fixed all of Public TV,
which was probably the worst trail. I think we may have a work day
soon, but if you have some free time get out and vote with your shovel
and get something that really matters taken care of. If you don't work,
you shouldn't speak.

I know Rocky Road is really bad,
Little Big Horn on both sides of GT Park and coming out of the cedars
into the ravines are all in need of work.

If you fix a spot, please email the DHPT email list so everyone is on the same page with what has been fixed.

If you don't know how to fix it, look at these pictures. All you need is a rouge hoe and a garden rake.

As you can see, things are still on the fritz when it comes to Spring Thaw conditions.

IPT has a lot of ice cover (to be expected) and it wouldn't be surprising if it were closer to the middle of April until things shape up (considering our current weather pattern.)

Temps are still going down into the freezing temps at night and warming up during the day- this means frost is still coming out of the ground in many areas.

Not too much damage from bike and foot traffic, but you can tell there have been users out in less than ideal conditions. A lot of pock-marks from deer hooves. You'll have a bumpy ride no matter what.

We have an album up on Facebook for Van Peenen (so far.)

We are not going to waste our time with daily checks at this point. With thick ice in spots, it's not going to change an awful lot in a single day.

One of our trail checkers reported that Dunnings was shaping up on a couple trails, but the majority still had some ice and/or were soft in above freezing temps.

Long story short- unless you ride our trails in the morning while temps are still below 34 degrees, please respect them and stay off until they have firmed up.

Trail ruts caused by riding partially thawed trails.

The transition from winter to spring is here and local trails will be experiencing freeze-thaw cycles. This means trail conditions will be unsuitable for riding until the ground freezes solid and daytime temperatures stay well below freezing.

What's the big deal with freeze-thaw cycles?
Dirt trails are extremely vulnerable to rut damage during the transition to and from winter because colder temps prevent the soil from drying. When soil freezes the growth of ice crystals push soil particles apart leaving large gaps that can fill with water when the ice melts. In a thawed state this dirt is much like a sponge and will absorb large amounts of water. It is also hypersensitive to disturbance by foot/bike traffic and flowing water and will form ruts with little effort. Direct sunlight and above freezing daytime temperatures can thaw the top layer of frozen dirt and create an easily rutted, greasy, muddy mess on the surface. Overnight, lower temperatures refreeze the top surface of the trails, ruts included, and the process repeats when conditions allow (hence the name freeze-thaw cycle).

Why are ruts bad for trails?
When ruts develop along a trail they channel water, causing erosion of the trail surface, and slow the drying process. Rain is highly erosive to trails when the ground is frozen and ruts greatly increase the chances of erosion by flowing water. When the soil is frozen, water can't soak in like normal and flows along the top in large quantities. Ruts on a trail can intercept these flows and divert them along the length of a trail. As the water flows down the trail and picks up speed it also picks up soil particles and washes them away from the trail. This can leave behind deep ruts tens or hundreds of feet long in extreme circumstances. Come springtime, ruts can also hold pools of water on the trail surface and prevent it from drying as quickly. If these puddles are disturbed by bike tires they can quickly turn into large mud pits. Fixing these areas eats up trail volunteer time that could be better spent on other projects. Wet areas like this also prolong trail closures.

Tips for riding during the winter/spring months where temps fluctuate between freezing/above-
Pay attention to the trail status
Don't ride frozen trails when the temperature is above freezing.
Ride frozen trails early in the morning before they have a chance to warm.
Don't ride if the temps are hovering around freezing and it is sunny. Wait until temps are below 25F and even then there may be thawed areas.
If after following all the above guidelines and the trails are still too soft, turn around and come back another time. A single rider can damage many thousands of feet of trail under these conditions.

Please respect the trails during the transition months in the winter/spring so everyone can maximize their enjoyment come springtime!
